Sir Anthony Hopkins addressed his estranged daughter, Abigail, in his memoir We Did OK, Kid, released on November 4, 2025. At 87 years old, he expressed a heartfelt wish for her well-being and made clear his openness to reconnect.
“I hope my daughter knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy.”
Hopkins reflected on memories from Abigail’s early years and expressed regret about their separation, emphasizing that leaving the family was painful but, in his view, necessary.
“Until the day I die, I will never forget the sight of her in that crib, laughing up at me when I walked in the room the first year of her life, sleeping soundly the night I left. I will always be sorry for hurting her when I left the family, even as I believe to this day that I had no choice.”
Abigail is Hopkins’ daughter with his first wife, Petronella Barker, whom he was married to from 1966 to 1972. In the memoir, he described their turbulent marriage, which was partly affected by his struggle with alcohol.
When Hopkins began his journey to sobriety, he attempted to repair relationships with both Barker and Abigail, including making a personal apology during a visit to London in 1997 when Abigail was nine years old.
“We put up a good front, but obviously so much damage had been done. They didn’t want me there. Throughout the meal, they kept catching each other’s eye and making faces.”
The actor also mentioned that Abigail stayed with him several times during her teenage years.
Anthony Hopkins uses his memoir to express regret and hope for reconciliation with his estranged daughter, showing a willingness to heal past wounds despite complex family challenges.
