In his memoir We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins opens up about the painful estrangement from his daughter Abigail Hopkins, which he describes as having "broke my heart."
The two-time Oscar winner, 87, shares details about his marriage to British actress Petronella Barker, 83, with whom he has Abigail, now 57. Their relationship was troubled from the start due to their clashing personalities and Hopkins' struggle with alcoholism.
“Our opposing personalities and my alcoholism doomed the relationship from the start.”
The couple married in 1967, but their volatile relationship soon became strained. When Petronella became pregnant, they attempted to maintain the marriage for their child’s sake, but it ended in failure.
“By the time we realized how awful a match we were, Barker was pregnant. We tried to rally for the sake of the child we were about to have, but it was no use. The marriage was a disaster.”
Hopkins has been sober for nearly fifty years, a significant change from the heavy drinking during his marriage.
Anthony Hopkins bares his remorse and complex feelings about losing a close relationship with his daughter due to past struggles and personal challenges.
