Comedy legend Eddie Murphy offers a rare look into his personal life in the Netflix documentary Being Eddie, where he discusses his children and his career spanning over four decades.
For more than 40 years, Eddie Murphy has been a beloved Hollywood figure, known for iconic roles such as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop, Sherman Klump in The Nutty Professor, and the voice of Donkey in Shrek. Despite his fame, the 64-year-old actor has kept his private life mostly out of the spotlight, making this documentary especially compelling.
“There’s a great clip of Eddie on a talk show early on in his career, talking about how he’s always been able to do impersonations and different voices. He talks about how his mom used to ask him, ‘Who’s Eddie? What voice is Eddie’s voice?’ This movie answers that question,” Being Eddie director Angus Wall said.
Wall explains that although Murphy has portrayed many characters over the years, he has never played himself on screen until now. “He opens up his world and his heart and I think people are going to really enjoy spending time with him.”
The documentary traces Murphy’s journey back to his teenage years, when listening to a Richard Pryor comedy album at 15 inspired him to pursue stand-up comedy. He aimed to become a comic by 18, a goal he vividly recalls:
“I remember when I turned 18, comics saying, ‘Hey, man, I thought you were going to get famous when you’re 18.’”
Eddie Murphy reveals his private side and lifelong passion for comedy, sharing insights into his family life and career in a heartfelt Netflix documentary.
