Charnwood is located centrally within the triangle formed by Nottingham, Leicester, and Derby. Over one third of its population of more than 155,000 reside in the vibrant university town of Loughborough.
Two poignant poppy displays have been set up in Loughborough as the town prepares to honor its fallen heroes on Remembrance Sunday. These installations are located on trees in Queen’s Park and on the Forest Road Greenbelt. Each tree is adorned with approximately 6,500 handmade knitted poppies.
The initiative was led by Loughborough in Bloom and the Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners, supported by volunteers and local community members. The trees were decorated ahead of the Remembrance Sunday service in Queen’s Park on Sunday, 9 November.
“This is a moving tribute to all those who have served our country and lost their lives in action. I would like to thank everyone involved with the poppies being knitted and installed onto the trees as they create a real centre piece ahead this year’s Remembrance Sunday service.”
— Cllr David Northage, Mayor of Charnwood
“Loughborough in Bloom pays its respects each year to those who have served and lost their lives in the armed forces and it is fantastic to be able to dress the trees in poppies once again.”
— Pat Cook, Chair of Loughborough in Bloom
The project demonstrates the dedication of local gardening groups and volunteers in creating a heartfelt symbol of remembrance, enhancing the town’s connection to its history and those who sacrificed for the country.
The displays will serve as a central feature for the Remembrance Sunday events, bringing the community together in reflection and honor.
