According to multiple reports, Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf has taken a step back from the organization and its AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, as he reflects on his future in hockey.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on his show Saturday Headlines and later on the 32 Thoughts podcast that Kampf has been growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of NHL playing time. This frustration has reportedly led him to take a break from the team.
“I don’t know exactly what was said…but Kampf did leave players with the Marlies [Leafs’ AHL affiliate] with the impression that he was going to terminate his contract.”
Friedman also noted that Kampf’s absence from the Marlies lineup could indicate deeper issues regarding his role and future with the Maple Leafs.
There are indications that Kampf and the Maple Leafs might mutually agree to end his contract. Friedman mentioned that Kampf’s current situation—affected by roster and salary cap constraints—has contributed to his decision to take a few days to reconsider his career direction.
“David Kampf has taken a couple of days to kind of think about his future. Obviously, he’s not playing with the Maple Leafs right now; he’s in a bit of a roster and salary cap crunch situation, and he got a little bit frustrated.”
As of Friedman’s latest update, Kampf was not traveling or playing with the Marlies during their game in Chicago, and his return to play remains uncertain.
