Florida basketball's redshirt freshman Olivier Rioux made history in the Gators' decisive win. Standing 7-foot-9, Rioux became the tallest player ever to appear in an NCAA game, marking a significant milestone for the program.
During the home opener, the Gators also unveiled their national championship banner, but the spotlight quickly shifted to Rioux’s debut. In the final minutes of Florida’s 104-64 victory over North Florida, the student section chanted for the towering freshman to join the action.
Florida head coach Todd Golden eventually gave in to the crowd’s call. Rioux recalled the moment:
“Todd just looked at me, and I just (pretended to take my shirt off) with my t-shirt.”
He expressed his appreciation for the support:
“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Rioux entered the game with 2 minutes and 9 seconds left, officially becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. The crowd of 10,065 erupted in excitement at the moment.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said casually about holding the record.
Coach Golden shared a similar laid-back view:
“Not something that I think that much about. I like the banner dropping before better. I'm happy for him that he got an opportunity to get out there tonight.”
Olivier Rioux’s historic NCAA debut as the tallest player brings a memorable and proud moment to Florida basketball’s promising season.
