UF’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux makes historic debut, becomes tallest person to play college basketball

UF’s Olivier Rioux Becomes Tallest Player in College Basketball History

Florida’s 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux made his much-anticipated debut against North Florida, setting a new record as the tallest player in college basketball history.

Historic Debut at the O’Connell Center

With the game already decided at 104-64 in favor of the Gators, a crowd of 10,065 chanted “Oli, Oli, Oli” to welcome the world’s tallest teenager and fan favorite, who had not played since arriving in the summer of 2024. Coach Todd Golden brought him on the court with 2:09 left and the Gators leading 102-61.

“It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and with the fans. I’m very grateful,” said the 19-year-old Canadian.

Record-Breaking Appearance

Although Rioux did not record any points or rebounds, his mere presence on the court broke the previous height record held by 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.

“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux commented, despite being a constant campus curiosity often approached for photos, autographs, or conversation.

Teammates Celebrate Rioux’s Milestone

His teammates, especially close friend Micah Handlogten, were thrilled to see him finally play. Handlogten, standing 7-foot-1, joked about feeling small next to Rioux.

“So much fun. When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and said, ‘Play with confidence,’” Handlogten shared.

Olivier Rioux’s debut marks a memorable milestone not only for UF but for college basketball as a whole.

Author’s summary: Olivier Rioux’s debut as the tallest college basketball player ever thrilled fans and teammates alike, marking a historic moment for Florida basketball.
