Campus officials at UC Berkeley have not revealed specific security measures but confirm they are ready to host the conservative group Turning Point USA on November 10. This event occurs nearly two months after the assassination of the organization's founder, Charlie Kirk, at Utah Valley University.
Turning Point USA, a nonprofit promoting conservative values on high school and college campuses, was co-founded by Charlie Kirk and his mentor Bill Montgomery in 2012. The Berkeley event will mark the organization's first appearance at a California college since Kirk’s fatal shooting in September.
Kirk’s death has raised worries about political violence and sparked renewed discussions about how universities manage the balance between security and free speech. John Paul Leon, a junior and president of Berkeley’s Turning Point USA chapter, has been involved in organizing the event since months before Kirk's death.
“(We’ve) been wanting Charlie for a long time,” Leon said. “I’ve been planning this since… June… It’s been a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it.”
The Berkeley chapter was founded in 2019 and continues to actively promote conservative perspectives on campus despite recent challenges.
Author’s summary: UC Berkeley is preparing to host Turning Point USA’s event amid heightened concerns about political violence following founder Charlie Kirk’s assassination, as campus leaders emphasize their commitment to free speech and security.
