On the "Today" show, Dakota Fanning revealed that Tom Cruise has been sending her shoes every birthday for the past 20 years. This unique tradition began when she turned 12.
Dakota’s love for shoes started young, catching the attention of her "War of the Worlds" co-star Tom Cruise. The 2005 sci-fi film, directed by Steven Spielberg, connected them as Fanning played Cruise’s daughter.
“He sends me beautiful shoes, it’s a tradition that started, I think, on my 12th birthday. I loved shoes, and I just had started fitting into adult-sized shoes, and so I was really excited about it. And so for that birthday he gave me shoes, and he’s kept the tradition going for 20 years.”
Craig Melvin asked if the shoes were luxury brands like Louis Vuitton or Prada. Fanning confirmed that the styles are “nice” and that Cruise definitely has great taste.
“He’s got good taste,” Fanning said. “He’s Tom Cruise, he can’t send you a pair of Keds.”
When asked if she actually wears the shoes or keeps them as collectibles, Fanning explained:
“I do [wear the shoes]. But I save them all, I’ll keep them forever. It’s such a great memory, it’s a way that he checks in with me.”
This long-lasting gesture highlights a meaningful bond beyond their professional relationship.
