Marnus Labuschagne makes his return to Australia’s Test side for the upcoming Ashes series, strengthening the middle order. His inclusion highlights Australia’s intent to build a balanced and experienced lineup ahead of the opening Test in Perth.
Jake Weatherald has earned his first Test call-up after a stellar Sheffield Shield campaign, scoring 906 runs in 18 innings for Tasmania at an average of 50.33. The selectors have also added two uncapped players, Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett, signaling a fresh injection of talent into the 15-member squad.
“Weatherald’s consistent form and ability to perform under pressure made his selection inevitable,” said a source close to Cricket Australia.
With Sam Konstas omitted following a poor West Indies series, Weatherald is now a strong candidate to open alongside Usman Khawaja. Matthew Renshaw and Mitchell Marsh also miss out on selection for the Perth Test.
As previously confirmed, Steve Smith will lead the side in Perth. Regular captain Pat Cummins remains sidelined due to a persistent back injury suffered in the Caribbean tour last July.
Author’s Summary: Australia’s Ashes squad blends returning stars and new talent, with Labuschagne’s comeback and Weatherald’s debut shaping a refreshed lineup for Perth.
