Craig Melvin, a Wofford College graduate and co-anchor of TODAY, recently returned to Columbia to film a hometown tour segment. The episode will air on NBC this week and highlight Melvin's experiences in the Midlands.
Nearly a year ago, the Emmy-award-winning journalist succeeded Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of TODAY. He described his role as more than just a host in an interview with the Post & Courier Free Times:
"You don't just host the show, you're not just one of the pieces of the show. You're kind of the mayor of this small town, and the name of the town is 'TODAY.'"
Melvin told the Columbia newspaper that his time away increased his appreciation for his hometown:
"I love it more now that I have moved away. I’ve traveled the world, I've seen a lot, but man, Columbia’s it."
He is a native of Columbia, graduating from Columbia High School. Melvin began his broadcasting career at WIS-TV in Columbia while still in high school, where he learned the meaning of journalism. The Post & Courier Free Times noted that Melvin spent nearly 36 hours on the streets, including sleeping in Finlay Park, to report on people experiencing homelessness.
The upcoming NBC segment will explore Melvin’s roots and highlight his connection to Columbia and his journey in journalism.
