Whelan received 22.36% of the votes, totaling 2,609 across all precincts. Grigsby closely followed with 20.01%, earning 2,335 votes.

The election took place amid ongoing discussions in East Lansing about its sanctuary city designation, policing policies, and financial challenges. According to unofficial tallies from the county clerk, more than 11,658 residents cast their votes on Tuesday.

“Results will be confirmed later this week when voter demographics are released,” said East Lansing City Clerk Emily Gordon.

Candidate Adam DeLay finished third with 14.85% of the vote, or 1,732 ballots, but did not secure a seat. Six candidates competed for two open positions after Council Member Dana Watson and Mayor George Brookover chose not to seek re-election.

Whelan and Grigsby will join current council members Erik Altmann, Mark Meadows, and Kerry Ebersole Singh, completing the five-member city council.
