Aimee Lou Wood shared how embodying her character Chelsea from the HBO series The White Lotus helped her face body dysmorphia during filming. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, the 31-year-old actress revealed that filming bikini scenes triggered the uncomfortable feelings she had struggled with since her teenage years.
Wood described the mental health condition as an obsession with perceived flaws in one’s appearance, as defined by the Mayo Clinic. She explained how she managed to overcome her insecurities by adopting Chelsea’s perspective.
“I shook myself out of it by thinking, 'It’s not about whether Aimee wants to show her body or not – Chelsea does,'” Wood told Harper's Bazaar.
This approach gave Wood a sense of empowerment and boosted her self-confidence. Although she sometimes needs time to detach from her characters, she values the personal growth her roles bring.
“It's precisely what I enjoy about my job,” Wood said.
